2010 – Birth Pangs of a New Order
One of the great things about astrology is that you can relate what is happening in the news to what is happening in the sky. As planets orbit around the zodiac, they form specific angular relationships to each other, called ‘aspects’. In some years, the slower-moving planets, from Jupiter outwards, form such patterns, and it is these years that stand out in history.
Take 1989 for example, which saw Saturn, the planet that symbolises walls and borders, rules, authority and old age, appear to cross (or ‘conjunct’) Neptune, the planet of spirituality, universalism and illusion. In the autumn, Jupiter joined the fray, adding hope, idealism and optimism. Saturn-Neptune conjunctions, which take place approximately every 36 years, symbolise the dissolving of boundaries, like the inexorable erosion of cliffs by the sea, and within three days of the 3rd and final conjunction of that year, the Berlin Wall was ‘breached’ and the authority of the communist governments dissolved almost overnight, as if by magic.
2010 is another such year. The ‘main event’ takes place this summer, as the ongoing battle between Saturn and Uranus, which began in the autumn of 2008, is joined by both Jupiter and Pluto. It is hard to unpick all the meanings of this complex pattern in a short article, but astrologers have long predicted that the period from autumn 2008 onwards would be a time when the economic optimism and growth of the previous thirteen or so years would ‘hit the buffers’ as Pluto changed sign from expansive Sagittarius to cautious and pragmatic Capricorn, and a new order would struggle to take over from the vested interests of the past. President Obama was voted in on the very day of the first in the current series of five Saturn-Uranus oppositons, and the recent UK election took place within ten days of the fourth. 2010 is the ‘crunch time’ when we have to deal with the consequences of our collective living beyond our means, and also marks the beginning of a period of social volatility as people rebel against the restrictions placed upon them by governments and corporations. More positively, it is a time when major scientific and political breakthroughs can lead to dramatic new beginnings, and age-old problems can at last find creative resolutions.
