Saturn, The Wise Elder
Saturn, the most distant planet still easily visible to the naked eye, has had a mixed reputation, astrologically speaking. Romans worshipped the god of the same name as one of abundance and agriculture, who presided over a golden age. In medieval and renaissance astrology however, he was ‘the grim reaper', his scythe reaping souls instead of crops, and had rulership over such things as bones, lead, architecture, boundaries, old age, illness and the past.
In modern 'psychological' astrology, influenced by the insights of such pioneers as Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung, Saturn is understood to be the archetype of form and time, bringing structure to the world and to our lives. In your own birthchart, Saturn shows in what area of life you might experience obstacles and difficulties, and where you are called on to develop patience and perseverance, as well as to set high standards in terms of your goals and behaviour.

If we try to avoid Saturn's lessons, we become saturnine - in other words, melancholy or depressed. We lack purpose and our lives begin to lose their shape. Or we over-compensate, pretending we have no limitations. Over the last few decades, Saturnian virtues became unfashionable, but increasingly, as we adapt to a time of austerity, people are re-evaluating the old lessons of thrift, realism and patience, those that our grandparents may have taught us. If we work with, rather than against, our Saturn principle, accepting life's limitations as well as striving to overcome our own, we can begin to develop inner strength, achievement and wisdom, the foundations for a lasting sense of abundance.

How do I find out my Saturn sign?
To find out your Saturn sign, use the widget on the right.
Enter your year, month, day, hour and minute of birth (make a rough guess if you don't know your time of birth - it is unlikely to make a difference to your Venus sign). Next, you need to know the time zone of your birthplace - and if necessary, whether 'summer time' was in effect. For example, if you were born in the summer months in the United Kingdom, choose BST (British Summer Time) instead of GMT (Greenwich Mean Time). Knowing whether it was in effect when and where your were born can be tricky. If you want to check, enter your birth details in Astrolabe's free birthchart generator. |

To find the Latitude and Longitude of your birthplace, check its entry in Wikipedia (it usually displays at the top right of the page). By default, the widget assumes you are East of the Greenwich Meridian (London), so you may want to change that to West if you live in the UK.
Leave the House System at Placidus and click 'Show It!'. You'll see your Venus Sign listed, along with your other planets' sign positions.
